Blackhawks look at the immediate future and how grim this year and next year may be, and they decide... lets go extreme. So they intentionally give 5 players career ending injuries in a "fluke" zamboni accident before practice at 5/3rd arena on a overcast November day.
Brodie, Maroon, Smith, Hall, and Martinez all lose a leg, and while a very serious injury, all live. But, because they are unable to play hockey anymore, this will trigger a disaster draft where the Blackhawks can pick players from other teams.
"The National Hockey League (NHL) contingency plan activates if five or more players on a team "are killed or disabled". The team would select players from other NHL teams, paying with funds from a special insurance fund."
All 5 players get exceptionally well paying jobs at Wirtz alcohol distribution buisness following their hockey careers.
